WCA ‘concerned’ by ‘threatening and intimidatory behaviour’ from countries yet to pay its players

The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA, formerly FICA) has expressed concern over reports of certain cricket boards not paying the men’s T20 World Cup “prize money in full” to their players. The men’s T20 World Cup took place earlier this year in the USA and the West Indies, with players from five out of the 20 participating teams, including eight Associate Members of the ICC, allegedly not receiving their dues.

The WCA released a statement highlighting the issue, stating that some National Governing Bodies have resorted to threatening and intimidating behavior towards player groups who have raised concerns about unpaid prize money. Tom Moffat, the WCA chief executive, emphasized the importance of players receiving their entitled benefits and being able to advocate for themselves and their colleagues in a safe environment.

Following a meeting in Singapore for its annual general meeting, the WCA approved the establishment of a Global Player Hardship Fund. This fund aims to support international players in need who are not covered by existing domestic support frameworks in the sport. JP Van Wyk, WCA’s head of welfare and education, stated that the fund will assist current and recently retired international cricketers who may be unsupported and vulnerable.

The fund will be overseen by an oversight group consisting of experts and players’ association representatives. Additionally, Heath Mills and Sana Mir have been reappointed as executive chair and independent director, respectively, within the WCA. The organization remains committed to advocating for player welfare and ensuring that players receive the support they deserve in the global cricketing landscape.
